Twitter Acquires Video Sharing Startup Vine; Could Get Native Video Sharing Feature Soon

Twitter has acquired Vine, a startup that focuses on video sharing on the mobile. The startup hasn’t even done a public release yet. All they had was an iOS app which was in private beta. Twitter got wind of this and immediately swooped in to add this company to their growing list of acquisitions. Why, you ask? Because Twitter does not have any native video sharing yet! The financial details of this acquisition have not been made public and it seems to be some sort of an ‘acquisition+hire’ thing but there chances that the Vine product could launch soon. Twitter has made it easier to watch videos though, with their new in-line preview and card style but it simply does not have a native function which does the video. Vine fits that gap. Vine ’s iOS app reportedly lets you create a 6 second video which it then loops, something akin to animated GIFs but with one important addition, sound! Imagine this functionality baked into the native Twitter apps. The video time should be more than 6 seconds though, because that is just too short. You can already share videos by adding video links to your Twitter posts but anyone who had done this on the mobile knows that it’s a little tedious. Native video sharing on Twitter would change the game for sure, especially in the area of citizen  journalism. I am excited about this and am hoping that this launches soon.
